Here is an offering of a concert by Dr Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna (BMK) which must easily be about 40-45 years old. But in freshness, it is evergreen. And it will be so.

BMK starts with a varNam in amrutavarShiNi whose import is profoundly simple—May all the rasikās, from a layman to a connoisseur, enjoy listening to Muraligānam and appreciate it.

This means anything only if a concert has in it every element of an idiom of musical presentation that BMK alone was able to offer. From the word go, this concert is one such.

There are a dozen more compositions after the varNam and ends with a mangaLam.

The repertoire of compositions spans the nava-rasas (the 9 aesthetics). They also span a wide range of languages. While most every composition has a rAga AlApana, the AlApana comprises the absolute essence of the rAga irrespective of it being a short or a detailed exposition. The pace (speed of rendition) of the presented compositions is also of a wide range—from the slow, full of feeling to the fast, with no less appropriate feeling. There seems a well thought out but spontaneously presented balance between the classical heavy and the classical light. There are, in addition to the rAga AlApana, the other usual but important elements too–evocative lyrical presentation, svara prastAram, sAhitya vinyAsam, tAnam, pallavi, and laya vinyAsam.

From the usual unavoidable physical irritants (clearing of one’s throat), which need to be managed appropriately, to a high sense of musical aesthetics, this concert is a reference. Not to mention the high profile accompaniments that BMK has in this concert; the result is a whole larger than the sum.

While the rendition of every composition deserves a few lines of narration, which will not be done for want of space, there is one that cannot be missed out –the stunning rendition of Saint Purandara Dasa’s composition, in Ahirbhairavi with lyrics in Tamil, that is absolutely moving.

With no details available about where and when this concert took place, it is truly a model concert with a model presentation. BMK is master of the situation all through with his unassailable versatility.

To ensure a listening experience that matches with the concert’s when it took place, this offering is one single file from the beginning to the end.
